Hello Havurah First Grade Awesome Wonderful Families,
In keeping with our focus on superhero symbols both from Torah stories and our own lives, we began the day with a short model magic symbol experimentation. The students made fascinating textural discoveries by twisting and blending to create new forms and color.
We then carefully washed our hands to ready ourselves for some real-life super hero action! Off to Cooking with Hillary, where we learned about Tzedakah ("charity"), Mitzvot ("good deeds"), and how we can give back to those who are less fortunate than we. This connects to the upcoming holiday of Chanukkah, which is not just about getting but also about giving. So, in our superhero uniforms of hairnets and gloves, our eager helpers worked under Hillary’s supervision to make cream-cheese sandwiches that Chef Hillary brought to a local shelter. It was wonderful to see how excited our Young Superheroes were to lend a helping hand and give back to their community!
After our fun-filled Tzedakah action, we caught a breath and calmed our bodies with our Shabbat Rituals by blessing the challah and grape juice, and lighting our candles. After some nosh, we had a really insightful conversation about the story of David and Goliath and tried to see the story from Goliath's perspective. Is there a reason he was so angry? Was there a way David could have solved the situation without violence? Our students came up with some wonderful ideas including, "try to use words", "maybe Goliath had a bad day or was hungry", and "always give the other person the benefit of the doubt!".
We then learned how to make a peace sign symbol and created another couple of badges to our super-hero capes for "lending a helping hand" and "keeping the peace". After some arts and crafts, we joined our other First Grade Havurah Superheroes for Music time with Megan! We had a wonderful time releasing some energy, and dancing and singing to a new maccabee song in preparation for Chanukah!
