Hello wonderful Havurah First Grade Aleph class!
We began class with matching the bread, wine, and candles to correct blessing. The kids absolutely aced it! (Little) Oliver suggested a wonderful new tradition this week of breathing in the light, recounting that his mom calls it pulling in shabbat. Ali and I are constantly in awe seeing how every week our ritual becomes more personal and meaningful for everyone.
After Shabbat, we gathered for our STEAM holiday specialty with Reuben. Reuben and our class made our own seder plates made of lego, talking about how each part of the plate symbolized a key part of the passover experience. There was such a wide range of artistic approaches! A few explanations included:
-James: This is passover so I want to write Matza in Hebrew on my plate!
-Charlie: I want to make a heart because I love love.
-Sofia: Everyone’s plate is so creative. I want mine to look like a real piece of matzah.
-Becca: Mine is a matzah but it’s secretly a matzah phone. Hold on a second, someone is calling me.
Back in the classroom, we talked more about our ongoing story of Noah and Naamah’s ark. We talked about how Noah and Naamah must have felt being given such a big responsibility and living in so much chaos for 40 days. We touched on what it means to be overwhelmed, how to deal with those feelings, what helps us when our surroundings are hectic, and how good leaders help us feel calm.
We then headed up to the roof and built our own arcs out of popsicles followed by a bit of free time. Meghan was sick this week, so Julia from the other 1st grade class told us the passover story.

Note about May 4: The first grade team is working hard to plan a field trip for this day. We will write to you with an update if we are able to make it happen. If not, we will hold regular classes at the JCC. Please be on the look out after Passover for an email from us about our plan for this day.
